What do do if you think you have termites?
If you think you have termites, it’s important to give us a call immediately!
Don’t disturb them any more that you may have already and certainly don’t spray them with insecticide!
Picking open their mud tubes or wood where they are feeding can frighten them away from the area. They may come back later or move to a different (unknown) area. Either way, it makes it more difficult to investigate and potentially more difficult to control.
The same applies to spraying them with insecticide. It certainly will kill the termites you spray, but it won’t kill the nest and will repel them from the area cause them to find somewhere else to feed.

How to Protect your Home from Termites?
There are 4 elements to a successful termite management plan to protect your home from termites:
- Building construction & Termite Protection: When the house is built, the construction elements should work together with termite protection measures to prevent termite entry. For example, a well laid concrete slab with termite protection around the utility pipe entry points, will prevent termite access. Similarly for a house built on piers, termite protection between the piers and flooring will prevent termites accessing the construction timbers without being noticed.
- Termite Treatments: Over time the building may develop a fault or maybe gets modified, or the termite protection may fail. For these older buildings a termite treatment may be necessary to maintain termite protection. There are two main types of termite treatments – soil treatments (to create a termite barrier) or termite baiting systems.
- Termite Inspections: Annual termite inspection are essential to check for:
- Active termites
- Termite damage
- Construction issues that could allow termite entry
- Conducive conditions around the home that could make a termite attack more likely
- … and also to maintain any warranties on termite protection systems / termite treatments
- Remedy construction issues / conducive conditions: It is essential to fix any problems identified in the inspection report to reduce the risks of a termite attack.
What do Termites Look Like?
Termites or White Ants?
Termites are sometimes called “white ants” as superficially they look like ants, but actually they aren’t ants at all! In fact, they are more closely related to cockroaches.
Yes, they are about the the same size as ants and they have 6 legs but if you look a little closer there are some significant differences.
Termites: Pale in colour, straight antennae, no eyes, no obvious waist
Termites: Dark in colour (brown or black), antennae with a bend or elbow, visible eyes and obvious waist.
Flying Termites
Flying termites are the new kings and queens (also called alates) which leave the nest in great numbers during a mating flight. These mating swarms occur on warm humid evenings in spring and summer. If you spot flying termites around your home, it means you have a large, mature termite colony nearby!
Termite Nests
Most termite nests are difficult to spot – they are either completely underground or hidden inside tree trunks. This is why termites are such a difficult pest to control. Some termite species produce visible termite nests in trees or as mounds on the ground.
Types of Termites in Brisbane
The main type of pest termite in Brisbane are subterranean termites, which means they live underground. The key species of subterranean termite in Brisbane are Coptotermes and Schedorhinotermes.
There is another type of pest termite in Brisbane called drywood termites. Although far less common, it is a lot more difficult to spot and control. They live above ground in the wood on which they feed. They only produce small nests, but they can produce a lot of small nests within the same building.
