Key Pests in Tingalpa
The 3 key pests in Tingalpa are:
- Termites
- Ants (including fire ants)
- Mosquitoes
Termites are the number one pest in Tingalpa as the warm, humid climate makes soil conditions perfect for nest building, tunnelling and foraging. Having a professional termite inspection every year is a necessary part of keeping a home safe from termite attack.
Ants can be a problem during the warmer months, both indoors and outside. Fire ants are now a concern for homeowners as they continue to spread throughout Queensland. AllPro Pest Control offers a number of specialist ant treatments whether it’s dealing with biting ants in lawns or an infestation indoors. AllPro Pest Control are accredited to provide fire ant treatments to homeowners and businesses. Being local we can treat areas quickly to get rid of fire ant nests to help prevent the spread.
Tingalpa is known for being a hotspot for mosquitoes and biting midges due to the waterways in the area. Heavy rains, high tides and humid weather create the ideal conditions for mosquito plagues. Aerial mosquito treatments have been carried out by Brisbane City Council in the past but to keep numbers down at home, a mosquito treatment can be very effective.
Termite Inspections and Termite Treatments - Tingalpa
Termites thrive in locations with moist soil, which is why homes in Tingalpa are at high risk from termites. Termites are subterranean insects, so they can easily attack the timber inside a home without being seen, accessing the home from the soil under the property. Having a termite management plan in place is the best way to protect a home.
Having a termite inspection every year is the first step to minimising potential termite damage. One of AllPro Pest Control’s experienced termite inspectors will assess the property checking for signs of termite entry and identifying potential areas where termites could gain access.
The second step is to install a termite management system. Various kinds of termite treatment exist, with the two most common options being baits and soil treatments. A baiting system involves installing termite bait stations are regular intervals around the property, while a soil treatment involves mixing a termiticide liquid with the soil around the perimeter of the building. The age, construction type and location of the home must all be taken into consideration when determining the most suitable kind of termite management system. Having a management system in place significantly reduces the risk of termite attack.
Tingalpa - Interesting Facts, Weather and Pest Control Recommendations
Tingalpa is a suburb 15 km east of the centre of Brisbane, near the end of the Gateway Bridge. It is about halfway between Brisbane City and Wynnum.
The traditional custodians of the Tingalpa area are the Quandamooka people, with land once being rich with plant and animal life thanks to the water holes and creeks. The origin of the name Tingalpa is uncertain; some believe it is derived from the words ‘Tinggal’ meaning fat and ‘Pa’ meaning the place of.
On the west side of Tingalpa Creek, a township arose in 1863, following the arrival of European settlers. But poor soil and the area’s geographical remoteness made it challenging for settlers to establish there. Meanwhile, to the north-west, a settlement formed and grew to become Tingalpa as we know it today. Settlers established dairy farms, sugar cane plantations and a clay works. The Royal Mail post office that opened in 1867 still exists, and is now the Tingalpa Hotel.
Today, Tingalpa is home to modern housing and shopping areas with several parks and areas of bushland.
Being flat and somewhat isolated from other major settlements, summer in Tingalpa can feel hot and long. Winters are mild, with the subtropical climate bringing enough rain throughout the year to accommodate many kinds of pests. Warm, damp conditions are ideal for termites and mosquitoes and midges can cause problems for those living close to waterways. A general pest treatment is an easy way to keep pests to a minimum numbers in check but for termites, the installation of a termite protection system is the only way to help protect a home from attack.
