Logan is on Yugembah land. European settlement began in the area after Captain Patrick Logan discovered what became know as the Logan River in 1926. Although originally cotton was grown, the area soon became dominated by sugar cane.
Logan city is now a large council area containing some 70 suburbs and an area of significant population growth. There are extensive industrial and commercial areas, with a variety of small to medium businesses. Logan is also a major transport hub, with both the M1 motorway and mainline train running through the council area. Although it is fast growing, some 80% of Logan’s suburbs are still designated as non-urban (rural, semi-rural or conservations areas).
The 184km Logan River runs through the council area. It captures water from a significant catchment area which includes the southern ranges of the scenic rim. It is at high risk of significant flooding, with the last major flood event back in Feb/Mar 2022.
