Rats or mice invading your home or business?
If you are hearing strange noises in the roof or you are finding gnawed packets of food in the pantry, it’s time to call the rodent control experts at AllPro Pest Control.
Rodent problems (rats and mice) can be difficult to control. Success comes from understanding which rodent is causing the problem, applying the appropriate rodent treatment and correcting the conditions that allowed the rodents to enter the building, so that re-infestation does not occur. AllPro Pest Control provide rodent control programs to eliminate your rodent problem.
The first part of any rodent control program is to carry out an inspection. It is vital to identify the species, map the areas of activity, how the rodents are accessing the property and if possible, locate the nest. The correct control program can then be put in place to solve the problem. This may involve the use of rodent baits or traps to control the non-native species, or traps to remove and re-home any native species (it is illegal to kill native rat species).
A rodent control program requires at least 2 visits for the most straightforward problem, an initial visit to carry out an inspection and place control measures and a follow up visit to confirm eradication and remove any baits / traps. For more involved problems or serious infestations, it may take several visits to gain control and sometimes an ongoing control program may need to be put in place.
The use of any rodent products not only takes into account the species, but any safety considerations; children, pets, food areas, etc. We always use lockable bait stations in our baiting programs and stations will be placed out of the reach of children and pets. However, sometimes this is not possible and so alternative techniques such as traps may need to be used.
If you are a commercial or industrial business, we can put together a regular rodent service, to ensure you keep your premises rodent free and have the required documentation to support any regulatory requirements.

To aid in the control and prevent future infestations, the recommended rodent proofing and sanitation measures also need to be implemented.
There are two main activities homeowners can do to minimize the chances of rodents or possums taking up residence;
Rodents are nocturnal animals. They feed on a wide range of food materials and are more than happy to live around buildings which provide many nesting areas in a warm, safe environment…… with a readily available supply of food and water!
However, what’s good for the rodent is not necessarily good for humans. They are certainly unwanted guests disturbing us with their activities; causing physical damage to buildings and wiring, consuming and contaminating food and making noise. Rodents are associated with the spread of several diseases such as typhus, salmonella, Weil’s disease and rat-bite fever. These are either spread by the rats directly or by the fleas and ticks they carry. Their presence can also set off allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.
With the ability of rats and mice to breed quickly, numbers can quickly get out of control. If you suspect a rodent problem, quick action is key.
There are 3 rodents that are commonly found in and around houses and commercial buildings. These are the common mouse, the roof rat (or black rat or ship rat) and the brown rat (Norway rat or sewer rat). There are four native animals whose activities may also be confused with these rodents; Antechinus can be confused with the house mouse, the native bush rat can be confused with the black rat and sometimes even brush-tailed and ring-tailed possums can be confused with the brown rat. Of course it is illegal to harm any native wildlife, so identification and treatment of suspected rodent problems is a job best left to the professionals.
There are two parts to getting rid of rodents, firstly you need to eliminate all rodents inside the building and then you need to rodent proof the building to prevent new rats or mice moving in.
To be honest, the quickest way to get rid of rodents is to use a professional pest manager. The main reason DIY efforts fail is that homeowners do not have the knowledge to correctly identity the type of pest rodents and know enough about their behaviour to design a rodent control program to get quick control. It’s important to know which bait to use, how much bait to use and where to place it. Simply throwing bait into the roof void rarely works (and isn’t very safe).
The idea that rats and mice go outside to die is a bit of a myth. They can get thirsty as the bait starts to have an effect, so they may go outside to look for water but equally, like most animals when they feel unwell, they will stay near their nest.
As baits are designed to kill rats and mice, which are mammals, there are also dangerous to humans and pets. Some baits are more toxic than others, but there is no “safe” bait.
The baits we use contain bittering agents, to make them unpalatable to humans and dogs. (Cats generally won’t eat bait as they are bait on cereals and cats are carnivores).
We also make sure baits are placed in lockable bait stations and where possible there are placed out of the reach of children and pets.
If there are particular safety concerns we may decide not to used baits at at all in some areas and only used traps instead.
In the cartoons, cheese is often used as bait in mouse traps. However, peanut butter and bacon fat (especially for rats) may be the best baits to start with. However, it is often necessary to try a few different baits as it can depend on what other food the rodents are eating.
Rodents like any animals will be repelled by certain smells. However, the level of repellents often incomplete and short lived. Products containing lavender and peppermint are often marketed as repellents, but often don’t have data to support the claims. If they worked professional pest managers would be using them as part of their rodent control programs.
Electronic rodent repellers DO NOT WORK. Indeed there have been actions by the ACCC against companies selling such devices and making claims that are not supported by evidence.
