Browns Plains is around 30 km directly south of Brisbane CBD and is well connected to motorways on each side, with Mount Lindesay Highway acting as the western boundary of the suburb. It has become popular in recent years with people looking to buy close to the city.
Before European settlement, the land was home to the Yugumbeh people, who are the traditional custodians of the land. The bushland, creeks and waterways they inhabited now sit alongside commercial hubs and residential developments. Settlers arrived in the 1870s, with timber and shingle splitting being the main trades. The township remained small until the 1970s when land developers constructed the first housing estate. Interestingly, the Browns Plains Tavern opened in 1976, exactly a hundred years after the first tavern was built by the first settlers.
The building of the Grand Plaza shopping centre in 1994 marked a significant turning point for the area, with a further extension granted in 2006 taking the total number of stores to 170. Today, Browns Plains is regarded as an up and coming area, a good place for first-time buyers looking for easy transport links to the city and airport.
